The complexity of economic equilibria for house allocation markets

چکیده
We prove NP-completeness of deciding the existence of an economic equilibrium in so-called house allocation markets. House allocation markets are markets with indivisible goods in which every agent holds exactly one copy of some good. 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modeling House Values: Extremal Equilibria in Allocation Markets with Non-Transferable Utility
Wealth effects impact the valuation and allocation of large indivisible goods such as houses. Yet no general method exists for quantifying these effects. We introduce an algorithm for identifying equilibria in allocation markets with non-transferable utility, thereby filling this gap. In cases with multiple equilibria, the algorithm can be used to solve for maximum and minimum equilbrium prices...
متن کاملHyperbolic discounting and secondary markets
Does the existence of secondary markets for durable goods affect price and allocation on primary markets? We study competitive equilibria for durable goods where the possibility of future trade on secondary markets does not affect consumer behaviour in the primary market, provided consumers are exponential discounters. If consumers are hyperbolic discounters, however, secondary markets are no l...
متن کاملThe allocation of complexity
Much thought and effort has gone into the design of new conceptual frameworks and theoretical tools for the analysis of evolving, self-transforming economic systems. Nevertheless, why not follow Marshall? In this paper, we present a novel but not unfamiliar way of analyzing the complexity of economic systems as the outcome of a self-organizing process. We shall propose a comparative static fram...
متن کاملAdverse Selection and the Accelerator
This paper reexamines the relationship between financial market imperfections and economic instability. I present a model in which financial accelerator effects come from adverse selection in credit markets. Unlike other models of the financial accelerator, the model I present has the potential to stabilize the economy rather than destabilize it. The stabilizing forces in the dynamic model are ...
متن کاملDYNAMIC COMPLEXITY OF A THREE SPECIES COMPETITIVE FOOD CHAIN MODEL WITH INTER AND INTRA SPECIFIC COMPETITIONS
The present article deals with the inter specific competition and intra-specific competition among predator populations of a prey-dependent three component food chain model consisting of two competitive predator sharing one prey species as their food. The behaviour of the system near the biologically feasible equilibria is thoroughly analyzed. Boundedness and dissipativeness of the system are e...
